Birthworker Business Tips: Grow Without Taking Insurance

Do You Have to Take Insurance to Build a Successful Birthwork Business?

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of birthworkers asking:

“Do I HAVE to take insurance if I want to grow my business?”

“Will I lose clients if I don’t?”

“Am I falling behind if I am not set up for it yet?”

If you have been feeling this pressure, I want to give you some clarity today.

You do not have to take insurance to be a legitimate birthworker.

You do not have to take insurance to be respected or ethical in this work.

You do not have to take insurance to build a sustainable, profitable, life-giving business.

Taking insurance is ONE payment method. That is all.

It is not a marketing strategy. It is not a business model. And it is not what determines whether clients find you, trust you, or book with you.

Here is what happens when birthworkers lean too heavily on the hope that “taking insurance” will fix their business:

They find that claims take months to process.

They realize that payouts are often lower than their standard rates.

And they still do not have a system to consistently bring in clients.

Insurance cannot fix what a lack of marketing clarity and systems breaks.

So what DOES attract clients, no matter what payment model you use?

Here are 3 core strategies that will grow your business with or without insurance:

1. Clear, values-driven messaging

Clients do not buy “birth services.”

They buy trust. They buy alignment. They buy the experience of being seen and supported by someone whose approach matches what they need.

The more clearly you can communicate:

  • who you serve

  • how you help

  • why your work matters to your client

…the easier it becomes for clients to say yes.

When your message is clear, clients do not care whether you accept insurance. They care that YOU are the right guide for them.

2. A simple, consistent marketing system

Many birthworkers are overwhelmed because they think they need to be everywhere online.

The truth is, you do not. You need a simple system where you:

  • show up where your dream clients already spend time

  • speak to their needs, fears, desires, and questions

  • Invite them to take the next step with you

Insurance will never replace the need for this system. And this is the system that brings in clients predictably, whether or not insurance is involved.

3. Automation and nurturing

Most people do not hire a birthworker the first time they hear about them.

They need time to build trust, ask questions, and feel connected to your work.

Without a nurturing system, leads fall through the cracks.

With a simple automation flow, you can:

  • stay connected with potential clients

  • build trust through education and story

  • guide them from curiosity to commitment

Again, this works whether they are self-pay or using insurance. The nurturing matters either way.

The bottom line:

If your business is struggling to bring in clients now, adding insurance will not solve that.

But if you strengthen your message, simplify your marketing, and build systems to nurture your leads, you will create a business that works no matter what payment methods you offer.

That is sustainability. That is freedom.

And that is what we teach inside my programs and free community, because birthworkers deserve to run businesses that serve both their families and their clients.
